Flew into Shelter Cove on 4-13-08. The old RV Park has been demolished and replaced by a nice lawn with plenty of picnic tables and an excellent view of the runway. The deli was open for lunch (on a Sunday). Nothing else appeared to be open, including the Chart Room (which is still for sale.) Reminders about Shelter Cove: There's no fuel, no services, and the tiedown area is covered in loose gravel. The taxiways are still clean, though, and so is the runway. I would avoid running a propeller when in the tiedown area!

The Chart Room continues to be up for sale but is often open for dinner on the weekends, at least during the spring, summer, and fall seasons.

Flew in yesterday, stopping at Little River for fuel before going up north on the coast (no fuel is available at Shelter Cove). METAR is available at KO87, as can be seen on the skyvector.Com chart right next to the airport. I would also recommend satellite imagery, as weather can vary between Arcata (closest TAF) and here. There are a lot of neat places to walk around, a lighthouse just off the airport, and the campground practically on the airport. We had lunch at the store on the south end right next to campground.

We flew to Shelter Cove for a family day trip on July 15, 2006. It was a beautiful day, and Shelter Cove is definitely a great place to visit. You need to watch for the stratus layer moving in - we had a beautiful sunny day. The airport is in easy walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and is right next to the campground and store. We had a nice lunch at the Chart House (which was up for sale at the time we visited because the couple running it is getting ready to retire). The espresso place across the street from the Chart House closed at 12:30, and a restaurant at the south end of the runway was only open for dinner, so make sure to call ahead to make sure the place you want to visit will be open. Something to watch out for: the parking area at the north end of the runway has a pretty significant slope. I helped a couple whose aircraft was about to get away from them on the as they were straining to push it into a parking spot, so be alert for that as you park.

My wife and I flew down to Shelter Cove on 5/21/05 from Grants Pass (3S8). It was our first time to this destination. Had lunch at the Chart House, fish and chips were great but the service left much to be desired. Took half an hour to get 2 ice teas and over an hour until our lunch arrived. The couple that came in 20 minutes after us were served half an hour before us. Oh well, we were in no great hurry anyway. Owners were very friendly. I guess they were just having a hard time spooling up for the busy season. I would definitely recommend a visit to Shelter Cove. Lots of attractions within walking distance.
