I stopped at Kay Larkin/Palatka regularly for fuel from 3/25 through 4/4 while training for my Sport Pilot ticket. 9/27 and 17/35 are in excellent shape, the facilities are quite nice for a small field, and the staff was very personable. Most important -- fuel prices were the lowest I encountered by far in the northern half of the state! Donna, the airport manager, hoped to keep the self-serve price for 100LL under $4/gal. At least through Sun 'N Fun. This airport is a hidden jewel -- I only hope the town of Palatka realizes that, and recognizes its importance. Oh, and watch out for wild turkeys!!!

We had to make a stop at Palatka due to weather few days ago. The folks at the FBO were extremely helpful and made a horrible day a pleasant one. Dave recommended a hotel about a mile (which he drove us to) that was reasonably priced ($92). There is not much for sight seeing, but if you need a place to stay overnight, Palatka is a great place to stop.

Donna was extremely helpful and accommodating during my first visit there. When I had to wait several minutes for my party to arrive, she offered coffee and danish to my delight. Fuel prices are the lowest around and the friendliness of the staff is reassuring that there are still those "gems" out there that really appreciate pistons. Certainly will stop there again.

Budget travelers need not stop. The cheep fuel prices are now $4.29 gal. And the local hotel charges $109.00 a night for a single. I put down for the night because of weather and a friend’s advice on cheep fuel here, but now in hindsight I would look elsewhere. Not wanting to be completely negative the gentleman at the Admin building (I think his name is Dave) offered me a ride to the hotel that evening and picked me up on his way in to work the next morning, nice folks!
Response from Donna Franklin, Airport Business Operations Supervisor, Palatka Municipal Airpor Having previously addressed Mr. Holder's displeasure with our fuel price, we would like an opportunity to address his hotel experience. We can not speak for the hotels; they operate on their own accord. However, upon viewing his comments, I spoke with our Dave and the hotel at which Mr. Holder stayed. The hotel stated that he was charged for the rate he was quoted, plus tax, an amount that was lower than the $109 indicated. The hotel expressed a willingness to discuss it with Mr. Holder, should he so desire. Many small airports assist visitors with local accommodations. It is a common practice. Our city and county has numerous hotels with various rates, thus providing several choices. We look forward to Mr. Holder's next visit and the continuing opportunity to offer him the quality customer service we are known for.

28J has historically had reasonable fuel prices, but suddenly they seem to be the most expensive self serve operation in the area. SS fuel is significantly cheaper at Keystone, Flagler and St. Augustine is a whopping 80 cents cheaper?????? There are good people at 28J, but something is not right and this appears to be price gouging by Shell Oil.
Response from Donna Franklin, Airport Business Operations Supervisor, Palatka Municipal Airpor 28J would like to address our fuel pricing. We can not speak for other airports, but our retail price is based on what we pay for it. What often goes unconsidered by consumers is the point in time when the retailer acquired their inventory and where the market was at that point in time. This is the main contribution to why such a difference in retail may exist among several Airports in any same given area. As for our current price of $4.26, 28J found ourselves in the position of needing to replenish our 100LL inventory when the market was at one of its highest points. The very next week the market fell and continued to do so. Albeit good for the industry, it doesn't change what we paid for what we have. Yes, we are historically one of the lowest if not the lowest in our area. And we will be again. We thank you, our customers, for your continued patronage and welcome all opportunities to make your visit the best it can be.

Going south to Sun 'n Fun had an unscheduled stop at 28J. They found me a motel, took me there, and gave me the phone number for a local taxi driver who picked me up early. Liked it so much I stopped on the way north. They also have good fuel prices. Great planning area.

The mighty Mooney and me overnighted at 28J March 3-4, 2007. Very helpful and courteous, Dave at the FBO made a fresh pot of coffee. Dad and me had a pleasant lunch on the table in the lobby, and then refueled at the trouble-free self-serve. $2.88/gal if memory serves. What a deal. Dave also hooked up the hose and we washed her up before heading out. What it lacks in glitz, 28J makes up in hospitality. And the little on-site pilot shop has the basics too, at fair prices.

The airport does have an FBO but it is nothing more than a building with air conditioning and bathrooms. Unfortunately, fuel is self-serve only for both Jet-A and Avgas. At the pump there are all kinds of warnings to pilots about abusing the self-service machine. The warnings talk about the receipt printer or something like that. Anyway, who ever wrote it needs to grow up because I haven't seen so many warnings posted about common sense things since grade school. Fuel is cheap, but I hope the airport goes under new management soon. The place could be a gold mine if run correctly.
Response from Donna Franklin, Airport Business Operations Supervisor, Palatka Municipal Airpor 28J apologizes to David Morgan for his bad experience with us. We are a small airport and do not yet offer the services of larger airports. We take pride in what we can offer, such as our well-known low fuel price, to which Mr. Morgan made reference. We also take pride in our image and reasonably so, wish to address Mr. Morgan's remaining references. Our fuel is available full-serve and self-serve. We are one of the few stations that even provide a self-serve option on jet fuel. Our fuel availability is clearly posted on AirNav and in our terminal building. The only warning posted at the fuel farm was a courtesy note to inform users that a receipt may not be available and that a new printer was on the way. The only other signage is operational direction. Certain other signage is required by law, be it common sense or not. Mr. Morgan, perhaps you were just having a bad day. The next time you are in our area, we invite you to stop back in and see us. We'll even pour the coffee for you.

The self service pump worked fine. The only problem was multiple taxiways closed due to re-paving. Fuel was 1.90/gal cheaper than Jacksonville.

Landed due to bad weather. Self-service pump worked fine. Weather access information/computer is "dial-up".
