A very scenic flight from Whiteriver (to the south) to Springerville. Fly it at 10,500 and the hill between the two towns is close to 9,500. Springerville runway is O.K. But does have some rough pavement. Check NOTAMS as most taxiways are closed. I recommend flying a little further and going to St. John. They have a better runway, better FBO and better fuel prices.

I called ahead and spoke to someone who assured me they were open, attended, had flight planning computers for pilot use, and that the 100LL was $3.88 per gallon. When I got there 1 1/2 hour later, no one was there, flight-planning room was locked, and self serve fuel was $4.27 per gallon. There was no one around to complain to, so I had to make an unplanned stop further down the road to do my planning for my eastbound cross-country trip into weather. If he had been honest with me, about the fuel price and flight planning facilities, I would have stopped somewhere else.Response from Steve West, Town of Springerville The Town of Springerville will have an attendant on staff by the end of May 2011. We are in process of building a new hanger and terminal building this summer. We expect to be the best in the White Mountains. Runway project will be completed in the next two months. Come see us!!

Airport is now attended only on a callout basis. The lineman servicing my TBM was friendly and showed up about ten minutes after I called, however he did not know if the Jet A was premixed, if they had Prist, or what either of those terms meant. I had to help him secure the fuel caps and he said that he was very inexperienced. I do not want to seem negative but feel I need to pass on my experience in the interest of flight safety. Hopefully some Springerville citizens will see this and help ensure this airport returns to its former status as a well staffed municipal airport.

Nice little airport. You will find airport employees between 8am and 4pm. However, fuel is now available 24/7 from a new credit card fuel island. Rental cars are also available but best to call ahead as they come in from Show Low which is 45 highway miles away. Sadly, Amelio is no longer the airport manager he has taken a job with the local highway department but on a good note he is now taking flying lessons right there at D68.

Some airports may be prettier, or have more gadgets or newer facilities but when it comes to down-home friendliness, D68 sets the bar. Thank you Emilio for the laid-back atmosphere we found, and the use of the car, and thank you Kimberly for befriending my passenger. You just made a new pilot.

Fuel priced as advertised...Unicom told us that the fuel truck was inop and just pull up to the pumps. After fueling, Bill went and got the gift from DHS...A six-wheel Polaris ATV...And towed us to a parking spot. Took the courtesy car into town...its exactly 1.6 miles from the airport so easily walkable if you want. B'fast at Safire's...Good food. This is a very friendly place and worth stopping...Even if just for fuel.

Fuel prices were very good and I can't say enough about Emilio and his devotion to running the airport.
