The Waycross-Ware County Airport and the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) is a well-maintained and well-equipped airport facility available for safe landings and takeoffs for government, commercial, transit and local aircraft pilots. The Ware County Board of Commissioners assumed operation of the FBO in March 1992. Since then, take-off and landing services have more than doubled from more than 3,300 to over 7,200 in 2001.
The Waycross-Ware County Airport was formerly the Waycross Army Airfield in the early 1940’s, used by the U.S. Army Air Corp as a training base for fighter pilots. Waycross Army Airfield was declared surplus by the U.S. Government on November 9, 1946, and on July 1, 1947, Waycross-Ware County acquired it for general aviation purposes.
Federal Aviation Planners claim that well-equipped and maintained airports play a vital role in a community’s growth potential. Moreover, we know that various industries look for airports in close proximity to local industrial parks, and our airport fits that criterion.
Today, Waycross-Ware county Airport ranks among the best in midsize airports and is one of the best equipped to accommodate most corporate and transit traffic. Aircraft navigating in any direction will find our airport centered within the FAA Southern Sector. Indeed, our airport and community are in a very economically strategic location.
