While at IYK, don't forget to check out some of the glider/ soaring accomplishments that have been set at this world-class location. The previous record for absolute altitude in a glider was held here at over 49, 000 feet!!! Steve Fossett visited when he was trying to set the new altitude record a few years back. Summer flights by gliders often exceed 6 hours in duration, 14, 000 feet altitudes, and are in excess of several hundred miles. With easy access to the Eastern Sierra, this is truly an amazing (and undiscovered) location.

As has been said previously, be aware that there are two AirBP sets of pumps. The one located on the south end is for local pilots/tenants. Transients pilots needing fuel will need to taxi to the pumps a bit further north as it is the only one with a credit card reader. Transient pilots should look for the pumps with the smaller AirBP sign and not just taxi to the larger sign (as I did). Runways are in great shape and recently repaved.

This is a nice big airfield with runways in nice shape. Just like the last comment, the pilot lounge is in the corner of the old big hangar about 100 yards SE of the self-serve gas pumps. There are two pumps on the airfield, but the ones to the South are reserved for tenant aircraft. There are very nice places to eat, among them was Torres Steak House about 100 yards from the Burrito place. From the gas pumps, if you look to the SE, you'll see a red roof. It is about a 10 minute walk. The food was good, and the service was great!

I am based at IYK and can confirm the pay phone was removed a couple of months ago. There is a 'pilot lounge' located in the north-west corner of the large hanger near the walk through gate. Entry instructions are on the most north window on the WEST wall of the building. Be sure to also remember the gate combo! Many times the 'lounge' is unlocked. Local cell service includes AT&T, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile & Verizon.

I was disappointed for an airport as large as this one, with airline service, that I could find neither a bathroom nor payphone, those two pilot-essentials (cell phone wouldn't work, as they only have Verizon in this area, it turns out, and mine needs Sprint). I arrived and departed mid-day on a Saturday and Sunday, and there were locks on literally everything including the airport offices, what appeared to be an FBO, a large, nearby hangar, and the airline terminal. Couldn't even find a large tree or a bush. :) There was a conspicuous sign with an arrow pointing "telephone," but none was to be found. I couldn't raise flight service nor flight watch on the ground. Do you hear the frustration in my voice? The good news is that is was easy to transit the Edwards restricted area (R2515) by calling Joshua approach (freqs on the sectional). So if you're coming up that way, you can save yourself a few minutes by calling Joshua. But Inyokern airport was like fighting the battle of Jerico.
