We flew in to KLLR yesterday and had a great time in Mendocino and Fort Bragg. Spotted 2 pods of whales about a mile off shore on the way in. The Fort Bragg Hertz office dropped off the car at the airport for us the night before ($30 dollar charge, but worth it. Just needed to make sure to call them > 24hrs in advance). Great gateway to the middle north coast.

Flew in Friday night to Little River. Great airport. The Super AWOS system made a weather announcement on the CTAF. I made a dinner reservation at Stevenswood, which they came, and collected us in their town car, no charge, had an excellent meal, then we got a free ride back. We are going to make another trip to Little River, this time to stay at the hotel so that the wife can experience the spa. Little River is a great location, close to the Van Damme State Park, and the beach where there is some good kayaking (took the wife there last year - good fun) - if you have a car, then head north to explore the coast line, up to Ft. Bragg - the North Coast Brewing Co. Is a good experience. Now I have more than 2 reasons to visit again.

No answer on the number for Hertz. Put the phone on speaker and left it there. Just rings and rings. Enterprise does not deliver cars to Little River Airport any longer. UPDATE: Hertz does indeed serve Little River. On Saturdays if it's a weekend, and any time during the week. Enterprise does NOT.

Stopped by on 1-23-11 for a sunny picnic near the airport ramp. There are nice hiking trails off the approach end of Runway 11 that are definitely worth exploring. The old Coast Flyers building is now a cozy little pilot's lounge. Regarding cell coverage, my Verizon phone had a normal phone signal, although I didn't have any mobile Web coverage.

What a great airport for a great Mendocino get-away! Big runway, big lights, PAPI, IFR approach (though not at night when we arrived). No cell phone coverage, use the public phone to have your hotel pick you up. Left in IFR condition, no problem with the RNAV departure. Got clearance on the ground.

Overall a fantastic airport to access Mendocino. We rented an Enterprise car and had an experience completely opposite Ken's. Since the airport manager Dave was off the day we arrived, Enterprise suggested I call before departing and they'd be at the airport when I landed, Wichita they were. Dropping off was easy since they also have a drop box at the airport. Spoke to Dave before we left about the new instrument approach. He said there have been 9 arrivals since it's been put in that wouldn't have made it otherwise. He said a PAPI installation should be finished by year end. As well flight testing is in the works for a VNAV version of the approach, which will have even lower minimums.

Touch and go at approx 1500hrs local in a C172...Didn't see the windsocks near the runway initially, but could feel a good strong cross wind landing coming on. One windsock appears to be hidden in the trees on the east side of runway 29! Strong breeze made for a stiff xwind landing, but was no problem with a 100' wide runway! I wouldn't recommend new or student pilots going here, at least in the late afternoon...The wind was really swirling over the treetops and down onto the runway.

We love KLLR and have been flying in for a decade. If you want to go into town or stay, you would be prudent to book a rental car beforehand, though you might get lucky (the taxi service is quite hit or miss). DO NOT use Enterprise for car rentals -- we've had bad cars and an extortionate billing experience, really not good people. The good news is that Hertz is now in Fort Bragg and very professional / helpful / reasonable (707) 964-0480. Mendocino is stunning with rocky ocean views, good eats (high end if you want) and shops + art. The airport manager, Dave, is very helpful. Enjoy. Ps, Verizon cell phones work at the airport, though other providers may not, so bring quarters for the pay phone if not on Verizon.

Great weekend at the Glendeven Inn B&B; picked me up at the airport soon after I called them. While we were waiting, my daughter had fun petting the two dogs that the airport manager had. Only wish that LLR had an IFR approach (they have a departure... Go figure). Thankfully, the gentleman working at the a/p made a suggestion on how to best enter the pattern and stay legal with the clouds that had just rolled in. Much appreciated!!

Make sure that your cell phone is set to allow roaming. There are areas without coverage but the ramp and parking lot work with roaming.

Just came back from my first trip to KLLR. Great place to land to stay overnight or just get fuel. Tiedowns are chains in good shape, so you know your plane is secure. The surprisingly long 5250' runway can be seen from over 20 miles out as the bright area surrounded by trees. $7 overnight tiedown fee (singles) that you can pay on site as the office was staffed when I arrived and when I left. The automatic weather is neat. First time I have seen this. It broadcasts on the CTAF when it detects a radio call, or if you give 3 clicks. Handy way to utilize a single frequency for two functions. Based on other comments, it seems worth mentioning that my Verizon phone worked on the field.

Still no cell phone service, but Enterprise now has a direct line, so you can call them. Didn't seem to need prior arrangement. AWOS seem to broadcast on CTAF after keying the mic. There is a pay phone and you can call 800 numbers without coins. Great runway and you can see the airport from 25 miles.

The airport supervisor Dave is helpful and so is his golden retriever Merlin. We had an unforgettable experience at Glendeven Inn in Little River. Mike picked us up at the airport, they provide pick up for guests. The accommodations were fantastic, with great views of the ocean, resident llamas, and fresh eggs from the chickens, tasty breakfast delivered daily to your room with the Chronicle. They have a great selection of wines and a daily wine and appetizer hours. When you fly into Little River, make sure you stay at Glendeven Inn, and say hello to John and Mike.
