Kern Valley is definitely worth stopping at for a quick bite to eat or a weekend stay at the campground. At least once every summer I visit the Kern. Campgrounds are very well kept and the cafe serves nice portions. I love the approach, make it interesting and fly between the two hills, but watch out for the power lines. Some may think this is a tight canyon, but it is really easy. A standard rate turn from downwind will put you on final on centerline. Watch for the sinker over the river. If you decide to visit the Kern you will go home very refreshed.

Nice place but a bit harrowing to land on Rwy 17 since you have to fly into a canyon on downwind.

Had a stressful week so I decided to fly my dog and myself to Kern Valley Airport for the first time. What a great place! Beautiful airport, nice campground, friendly people, great food at the cafe. A great experience for me. It was fun flying through the Western Sierras. Dog had a blast. Will be making many more trips out here.

Had a great July 4 weekend flight with a group of 5 SOCAL RV pilots. The hamburgers still are 1/2# and (to the average pilot) require utensils. From the campground parking area it's a short walk to a classic Sierra mountain stream, the Kern River, as it flows into Lake Isabella. This is a Walt Disney kind of setting and spectacular anytime of the year. Spend the night in the adjacent campground or nearby motels.

Yet another great flight yesterday to Kern Valley. The hamburgers are way too big, so we ordered the Reubens. Five stars and a notation in my logbook. You can taxi into airplane parking for the campground for a picnic or a several-day stay. We'll do it next time. Just remember to recalulate weight and balance after eating in the cafe. The ladies in the cafe are among the friendliest at any strip I know of, and they are great on CTAF frequency 122.8

All pilot guide said that rental cars were available to go into town. We we got there, the girl at the restaurant said we had to arrange for the car a week ahead of time. Needless to say. I had to tell family, "No day excursion for us". Food was excellent however.

Great place! A group of us from the Travis AFB Aero Club from Rio Vista (O88) flew in over the weekend of October 10th and 11th. The campground was beautiful; the service at the airport was excellent. The cafe there serves large portions, no joke. So don't plan on eating the rest of the day if you eat there. They have rental cars at the cafe for $15 to $20 a day and they handle all the fees including the campground. If you do end up renting a car, ask for the Chrysler, it makes the trip a true adventure. Make it a point to go to the Kern River Brewing Company in town, they have really great beer.

Wow! The Airport Cafe has the largest burgers I have ever seen, anywhere on the planet. Tasty, too. Ten of us flew in from various locations for lunch on Saturday March 4. The staff was friendly, and we ate on the outside porch with the two dogs that some of us had brought. Delicious burgers, nice quiet airport. We'll be back!
