Jan 31, 2012. Very smooth pea gravel airstrip. Tried to raise them on Unicom, but no answer. Didn't know if one could taxi to the motel/store site or not, so got about 1/2 way and found a wide spot. Later told that is okay to taxi all the way in. Very friendly folks. Kitschy route 66 decor in motel/store and the restaurant and gift shop at the cavern entrance. They will pick you up at the airport and shuttle you to the caverns also. Short walk from airstrip to motel/store and about one mile to caverns if you feel like it. Don't forget you are over a mile high. Cavern tour was interesting. Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn't open until sometime in March. They had hot dogs at the gift shop so we didn't starve.

Five of us flew in with 3 planes Saturday and had a great time, including excellent food at the restaurant, an interesting cave tour, and a general friendly, down-home atmosphere, not to mention probably 30 degrees cooler air.

You have to tip your cap to businesses like Grand Canyon Caverns who maintain an airstrip for the use of their customers with little or no return on investment. There is no FBO, they don't sell fuel or supplies, but they still maintain a nice "long" gravel strip that is perfect for anything from Luscombes to Barons so you can stop in and see the caverns! The caverns are a fun way to spend an hour, the motel is okay, and they have a pretty nice campground on site. They will pick you up at the airplane and take you over to the caverns or the campground. Nice folks. We used the caverns and campgrounds as a base for our group of Cub Scouts for a few days. The strip was perfect to use for intro flights for the scouts. The whole place just reeks of 1950's nostalgia. It is out in the middle of nowhere and is located right on Historic Route 66. Bring your own tiedowns and be sure to have fuel when you arrive...Other than that, have fun!

Gravel runway well kept. Nice story in Pilot Getaway Magazine (Sept 2010) led me to visit, well worth trip, good courtesy transportation, and cool motel suite in caverns. I'll go back with a group next time.

Very nice strip. It is gravel, but in good condition. One thing I can say is I would recommend bringing stakes. There is one cable to tie down to, but we had to hunt around for a way to tie down the tailwheel. We spent the night at the motel, which is nothing fancy but the staff is very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is closed after 4 during their winter hours, but the general store has some food. We had breakfast at the restaurant, which was excellent. The caverns tour was a lot of fun too.

Gravel runway was not a problem. It had rained hard the night before but the runway was dry and no ruts. We landed on Rwy 5 and continued to taxi along the road and park among all the other cars out in front of the main store and gas station. That was fun. Then, people started pulling off Route 66, got out of their cars and took pictures of the strange sight of airplanes parked right out front. We were given a ride up to the caverns - a short 3-minute drive. We walked back to the motel, where the plane was parked. Departed on Rwy 23. A unique experience and fun day. I'll be back.
