The gravel runway is in good condition. No trouble for my Mooney. You want to get to the approach end of 23, so winds permitting I would suggest landing long on rwy 5. It was a pleasant 1-mile walk to the caverns, although they are more than happy to drive you both directions. The cavern tour takes an hour, for about $15. Our guide was excellent and kept the jokes coming. The restaurant was closed for the month of January but is due to reopen soon. While it isn't Carlsbad Caverns, it makes a nice day trip.

The Big Bear Pilots Association just returned from a great weekend at the Caverns. We had 9 airplanes and 17 people and we all had a wonderful time. If you practice good soft field techniques you should have no problem with the runway. The underground Cavern Tour was amazing. The restaurant food was amazing and prices were amazingly low. The prime rib was the largest serving I have ever had and it was incredibly good at less than $18. I saw the food that others were being served and the fried chicken and spaghetti dinner plates will be on my list for the next time I go. A Grey Goose Martini was only 4 bucks and beer was on special for $2 a bottle!! I plan to go back and just spend a few days relaxing in this picturesque high desert location (and do another tour of the Caverns!). If you are part of a pilot's association, I highly recommend this as an overnight fly-in destination. If you want more info from me, my email is donshade@aol.com
