Perspective on mixed traffic W of S50: On a recent CFI-H training flight, while flying downwind below and inside the line used by ASEL traffic, we realized a taildragger would pass when we turned base and decelerated. After checking w/me, my CFI called on CTAF suggesting we extend downwind so the fw could land first. The fw pilot declined the offer. As I terminated to a hover, he was forced to go-around. Don't we talk on the radio to sort out situations where strict adherence to rules doesn't make sense? (We had right-of-way by virtue of being ahead and below the other traffic but offered to adjust our pattern giving him space, thus complying with the guidance to avoid the flow of fw traffic, while still allowing me to fly a standard traffic pattern for training value.) Mixing fw & rw traffic W of S50 is not unsafe if we work together. West traffic over highway, railroad, farms and Emerald Downs is safer and more neighborly than putting helicopters over Auburn. Respectfully.

Airport management is seeking to reduce safety by making fixed wing and rotary traffic fly together on the West of the field. This is contrary to FAA guidelines and there are no specific NOTAMS or information in the ADF requiring all traffic to remain West of the field. It seems that noise abatement is the primary concern but since Helicopters have been flying to the East for years I can't imagine why the people living next to the airport suddenly have a problem. The Management is also jamming the CTAF with idle chatter to Helicopters further reducing safety for all, and it seems they are closely following aircraft up and down the taxiways without self announcing which is also VERY DANGEROUS. If the management wishes to change the flight rules they should contact the FAA and not harass student pilots. I encourage all aircraft to use the airport for training but not use hangar or fueling services until the management improves safety. Fly Safe.

Response from Jamelle Garcia, Airport Management Group, LLC
Jeremy, the change in the traffic pattern was a result of over 115 complaints about helicopters flying low over houses and schools east of the airport, you are right. This change to the traffic pattern was a combined effort between the airport and the FAA over the last 3 years. There was no impulsive reaction to the noise complaints. We tried for years for helicopters to "fly friendly" but it only takes a few to ruin it for everyone. Again you are correct they were not doing anything "wrong" by regulations, but they were not doing the right thing to be good users of the airport. There were helicopter pilots, which intentionally provoked the residents. Again, this change was not impulsive; it was a combined effort between the FAA airport, FAA Safety Inspectors and the local helicopter pilots. I will forward your comments to the FAA FSDO so that they may also address your concerns.

I'm not real happy with the service at this airport; the management is far from friendly. I'll go to neighboring airports in the future.
