As a followup on my February 11th experience, the management at Windwood Fly-In Resort has taken the initiative to contact me and apologize for my family's trying experience. I take this as a sign that they may be interested in improving conditions for visiting pilots and their families. Be advised that you still need to bring your own tie-down ropes to use with the cable that lies along the ramp.

I suppose I have the lone bad experience here. Flew in on the 11th of February for some cross-country ski fun. Strip was plowed well, however the tie downs were not cleared on the ramp and unusable. No transport to Amelia’s where we were to pick up a rental car. Remember the worst beat up crew car you ever borrowed from an FBO? Well it is this type of car that is the "rental" car for $25/day. Battery was dead so a kind gentleman offered a jump-start, as there was no help from the lodge staff. The lady behind the desk was nice enough, but she had no idea where any of the ski facilities were. If I ran this operation, there would be MANY changes to help transient pilots. Don't expect too much when you arrive and you will be OK.

Flew into Windwood today, for lunch, and a quick trip into town (Davis). Jody and Josie could not have been any nicer, or more helpful. It was an uncharacteristically warm January Friday, and we had the place to ourselves. Note that runway 24 has a displaced threshold for trees, and that it's also uphill. It was such a beautiful flight, so close to the major metro areas, I can't recommend the area, or the faciliy, enough.
