Flew into the airport for the anniversary. The airport has room for about 12-15 single engine aircraft. Great facility with lots of stuff to see and do. We took a short walk to the Outer Banks Brewing Station for lunch. Delicious and very short walk to the restaurant. Food was priced very well. Highly recommend flying to here!

First Flight airport is a great place to visit as a pilot. I have noticed in the last 3 years in a row however people disobeying the 'Pilots and Passengers beyond this point' signs. In Late August 2011 I observed 5 or 6 small kids riding scooters and bicycles on the tie down area and on the runway! One of the children was bike riding between the tiedown rope of a high wing airplane and the airplane. Their mothers were with them. I notified a Park Ranger of this and he chased them away. I guess they thought the rules did not apply to them. Although you are permitted to leave an airplane at FFA up to 24 hours, I'd be reluctant to leave it overnight. It really is a shame. Do they have to put a barbed wire fence around this beautiful little airport?

Stopped for an hour to walk the sacred ground. Unfortunately we arrived about 15 minutes before the museum closed, but still had time to walk around before seeing the grounds themselves. AOPA planning office was nice as well. Code for the door is 1200#

As others have described the landings can be interesting; we were entertained the afternoon we were there by the constant coming and going of GA aircraft and variable quality of the landings. Nice clean facility just for pilots, glad we stopped there.

Second visit in as many years. If you have not flown into this airport, walked the grounds, and enjoyed the many things about First Flight - put it on your bucket list! Truly, something every pilot should experience! Thanks!

Flew in today from New York for a visit to the birthplace of aviation. Was not disappointed. The monument is something to see, but more memorable is the field where Orville and Wilbur started it out. AOPA pilot room is well equipped, rest rooms were clean and flights in and out were easy. Runway is in good shape. No services available so be sure to carry enough fuel in to get out.

We flew in 9/28/2010 and it was a great trip, as others have mentioned if there is a crosswind it is a little interesting descending the last 30 ft. A very nice lady in the gift shop told us about a great restaurant within walking distance of the Memorial called the Outer Banks Brewing Station, only a mile away, look it up on Google Earth. The food was great and we brought home some very good stout; of course did not have any while there since we were headed home. Highly recommended.

Flew in on July 31st. This was my second time back and I brought a new VFR pilot with me to share the experience. It's a great place for a day trip and to see where it all began. Easy parking, Great on-site planning room (door code is 1200#). Recommend KONX, as your fuel stop at KFFA has no fuel.

Very nice AOPA facility and well worth the pilgrimage. There is a Subway sandwich shop within walking distance.

Great stop! Takes about 2 hours to see the highlights, and requires a little walking. AOPA pilot lounge is wonderful. Windsock was missing but there is a flag nearby. With the powerlines on the approach to 20 it's prudent to make your own displaced threshold. Be aware in crosswind that the treeline interaction can be complex and different along the runway.

Dropped in about 5:00pm with our C-208 Caravan. Truly is a neat place to visit to see where it all began. AOPA has a very nice welcome center with restrooms. Come earlier to see both the monument and the museum.

From Mike Marra, KEYSTONE FLIGHT on 22-Mar-2010

Flew in on a perfectly beautiful day in March with an EIGHT-SHIP formation of the KEYSTONE FLIGHT out of Central PA. Folks, there is NOTHING like flying your plane into FIRST FLIGHT - it's a pilgrimage for all aviators! The facility is spartan, but good for a day trip in and out. BE PREPARED TO TIE DOWN ON THE GRASS - there was absolutely no room for any of our 8 planes on the tarmac, but NO BIG DEAL as we were prepared for it. NOTE: There are HUGE powerlines going up on the approach end of Runway 20 - they will get your attention! Lots of walking, but worth it - if you bring pets, keep them off the grass - stickers! Bring food; not much to purchase! AOPA room is very nice; stop by to register for your certificate if you want one for your kids, etc. All in all a wonderful stop every pilot should make at least once! Great job FFA staff!

Flew in on 1/15/10. What a great time of year to visit. There were very few people in the park and we had the entire place all to ourselves. The rangers did an excellent job of describing events that led up to and took place on December 17, 1903. With so few people in the park we were able to get almost one on one time with the rangers as well. The ramp has tiedown ropes available and the pilot facilities are in great shape.

I visited First Flight on Oct 21 2009 on a pleasure flight of the outerbanks. What a great airport and historic place to visit. Everyone who flies should visit the Wright Brothers Memorial. I can't wait for a return visit.

Nice place to land. No fees, can park up to 24 hours w/o permission. You won't have to pay the park entrance fee if you fly in. Runway good shape, no aviation services/unattended. AOPA facility by airstrip in great shape has A/C, bathrooms, and nice flight planning equipment. If you want something to eat, walk down Collington Road. Do not attempt to walk out the main entrance of park after viewing the memorial and exhibits. You will see Collington Road on the approach threshold to runway 2, and also runs just a couple hundred yards beyond the brown metal mockup of the Wright Flyer and the renditions of the Wright Brothers and their staff, which sits just south of the base of the memorial. There is a nice and safe bike/walk path along the road, and it is about a one-mile walk to a Subway and Dairy Queen. Furthermore, from this intersection (Collington Road/US-158 Croatan Hwy) you have a short walk of less than a half-mile to a very good public beach access complete with a bathhouse.

Very memorable experience landing at First Flight with the family, visiting the memorial, and touring the museum. Been there several times before by land. Much more meaningful by air!! Highly recommend The Black Pelican restaurant a short taxi ride away.

Watch out for the banner towing but otherwise a very memorable experience landing here.

From George Perry on 09-Mar-2009

FFA is a first rate airport. Short walk to the Wright Memorial and the AOPA facility is really great. High / gusty Winds are a bit of an issue although I didn't see any deer. Great stop!
