No frills Airport, not even a windsock automated weather reports lacks wind info. I had to use the Flag near the monument to gauge the strong winds at the airport. Other than this it was a nice stop to see how we all became pilots in the first place.

Flew in 9/21/2010. Great place to check out flying history. I cannot believe they don't have a windsock at an aircraft oriented memorial park, but nonetheless great place to come see the sights. We will be back!

Great day trip location! Windsock hard to see, but Monument area has flags flying. Pattern is right traffic for RWY20, left traffic for RWY02 (published in NC Airports guide). Mention this because someone came in opposite way. Tie down ropes for 12 planes. Today 4-5 used. For food, we walked to the Wright Flyer replica located at the south edge of the monument circle, & walked out of the park south from there, to get on Ocean Bay Blvd, then head east. At the intersection of Croatan Hwy/158 is Dairy Queen, Subway is inside the Kangaroo gas station. If you go south on Croatan Hwy 4-5 blocks, you'll find: Outbanks Brewery Co, Quizno's, Slice Pizzeria (good!), and others. Beach is accessible just about everywhere-just walk right to it as there's pathways between the beach homes. Be ready to walk 1-2 miles. Banner tow-planes are around, talked to one on dept, who said he was at 400 ft. First Flight is a must-see/must do stop in your XC logbook.

Nice place to land. No fees, can park up to 24 hours w/o permission. You won't have to pay the park entrance fee if you fly in. Runway good shape, no aviation services/unattended. AOPA facility by airstrip in great shape has A/C, bathrooms, and nice flight planning equipment. If you want something to eat, walk down Collington Road. Do not attempt to walk out the main entrance of park after viewing the memorial and exhibits. You will see Collington Road on the approach threshold to runway 2, and also runs just a couple hundred yards beyond the brown metal mockup of the Wright Flyer and the renditions of the Wright Brothers and their staff, which sits just south of the base of the memorial. There is a nice and safe bike/walk path along the road, and it is about a one-mile walk to a Subway and Dairy Queen. Furthermore, from this intersection (Collington Road/US-158 Croatan Hwy) you have a short walk of less than a half-mile to a very good public beach access complete with a bathhouse.
