I experienced an internal engine failure inflight and landed off airport near HLC. The airport manager helped arrange for recovery of my airplane to the airport (having closed 2 US highways and removed signage for a 12 mile stretch) and hangared me engine-less for over two months. All at no cost to me!! Friendly people and a great airport staff. Plus, Self-Serve fuel is coming. Make Hill City a stop; you won't be sorry.

Stopped in on a round robin from KAPA in a C-172. Great airport and friendly people. If you’re going to grab fuel just pull straight up to the pump so you don't have to pull from the tie downs. Internet is available upon request. Still not set up for credit cards so bring some cash. I was told that if I had to mailing a check would be fine. Nice little lounge. Only a pay phone but I had coverage with Verizon.

Generator on my Viking went out while staying there for business, the "crop doctor" is one of those guys that loves his job and it shows. Even being down on my luck in the middle of nowhere, time and again, aviation has delivered me humbleness and shame. For the folks that get irritated by going to a place where things are a little slower or not right at your fingertips, life might be telling you to slow down. Thanks to the crop doctor I got home, wish there were more mechanics out there like him.

I stopped here because of high winds in my Cessna 150B Sept 29th 2007. A local ag pilot (The CropDoctor) was nice enough to adopt me for a few hours, helped me get some food, get my plane tied down for a few hours, and was nice enough to help me weld my broken oil dipstick back together! Fuel price is about the cheapest around, although the payphone is a little disappointing. Nice lounge, and although there is no advertisement of it, wireless Internet is available in the lounge. My AT&T cell phone didn't work here so bring a roll of quarters in order to call for fuel. They don't take credit cards, so bring cash. They were nice enough to bill me for the fuel, so I was able to send them a check when I got home! If life brings me through here, I'll definitely stop again!

I lost an engine over Kansas and Hill City was my nearest and best choice to land. I could not have found a nicer airport, staff or town in the country! Dennis, the airport manager, was especially helpful in so many ways, including arranging the power-line truck to remove and re-install the engine after repairs. All the service you could hope for is only a few minutes away. Oh.... And the remark about the pay phone...I left a roll of quarters.

Stopped for lunch and fuel. No one was around. The fuel pump controls seemed to be locked in an adjoining room. At least they have a nice air-conditioned lounge where I could buy a cool drink - and then go on to the next airport for fuel and lunch. I marked HLC off my en route stop list.

Landed there 23 July 2006 and found it to be one of the better equipped airports for Northwest Kansas. There was a bathroom with a shower, pop machine, a small refrigerator and microwave oven. The lounge even had brochures of the local area. Too bad it is not attended on the weekends--makes it hard to get fuel or arrange for a courtesy car which is supposed to be available if you call but bring change for the pay-phone.

Upon landing, the airport looked abandoned. Payphone (bring change) to call for gas service. Got a neighbor to call, as I had no change for the phone. Nice people and an offer of transport to a restaurant were made.

On my way to Oshkosh 2005 and stopped here for fuel. Reed was very helpful and took us into town for lunch after filling the Mooney. Facilities are nicer than one would expect for being in the Kansas. I'll be back if I'm in the area.
