FBO opens only half a day. We arrived late and called the phone number posted on the door. The person answered the phone was very helpful. We got the phone number of local taxi and had a pleasant overnight in Merced.

Flew in last week to pick up elderly friend. Excellent service and they let us use the courtesy car (Saturn in good shape with working a/c) to take care of business in town. Ate at Hangar BBQ for lunch - small and casual - very tasty food with prompt and cheerful service!

Flew into Merced on the way to Yosemite. Could not get a rental car at Mariposa so this was a second choice, but turned out great! First of all the FDO has a lineman, Frank, who is incredible at customer service. Helped us in and out their security gate, assisted with tying down the plane and unloaded luggage. Very friendly help. Was there a week and no tie down fee with gas purchase. Gas price a bit below average for area. Second is the great barbecue restaurant at the field, Hanger BBQ. Very tasty, very fresh and terrific service! Highly recommend.

With a localizer (back course) approach on top of RNAV and ILS, plus helpful controllers, KMCE is a great airport for logging cross-country time and practice approaches out of the SF Bay Area. The restaurant on the field is open again and serves excellent BBQ, too!

I stopped at Merced to visit the Castle Air museum. I discovered a burned out flap motor on my RV-6A when landing. Gateway fixed the aircraft quicker than I could have and I built it. Gateway is a great FBO. They quickly arranged car, lodging and hangar for me at a reasonable cost. Watch out for the big guy with no hair. His gut dropping greeting was "Great, another RICH pilot." He's a nice guy and really knows his stuff. I also met some of the airport personal and was very impressed with their attitude and dedication to the airport. Merced is a very good place to give your business to.

Easy-to-use self-service pump with an adjacent restroom. However, the soft drink machine next to the pump is inoperative, so if you require refreshment you'll need to walk across the ramp to the FBO itself.

Nice Airport - just south of Castle AFB - be careful departing to the North, or you'll end up in their airspace. The self-service fuel is inexpensive and easy to access. The facility is across the ramp from the pumps and has a clean rest rooms and a pleasant lounge area, and chairs under the covered porch for sitting and watching the world fly by.
