Nice restaurant/bar with excellent bartender on field. Car rentals only available until 6pm; no courtesy car. Cab to Santa Cruz roughly $50. Tie-down $6.00/night not $5.50 as posted, not waived after $300 fuel... Annoying.

I had another great week-end at WVI. Keep your eyes open for lots of traffic during nice weather days, an ultralight, Bonanza (myself), a twin turboprop and a jet in traffic pattern at the same time. I have always had good experience with Hertz rental car located at the airport.

As a C414 driver, I'm always looking for airports with both relatively cheap avgas and instrument runways longer than 4, 000 feet near areas where I do business. I recently tried Watsonville, and was very pleased. The fuel is self service, but at an easy-to-use large island that can accommodate multiple aircraft. Overnight aircraft parking is right in front of the restaurant/terminal, marked by a number of "red tire" tie-downs, and with spaces big enough for jets. The Hertz office treated me very well, leaving the keys for my car at the restaurant on the field so I could pick the car up late in the evening after the rental office closed (They needed me to be a Hertz Gold member to do that, though). The restaurant was open 8am - 9pm, and quickly packed up a lunch-to-go for my departure. Norcal approach frequency works on the ground for a quick IFR clearance pick-up. Overall, a great experience!

Hertz is best avoided here. I have used Hertz at dozens of airports throughout the country. All of the experiences, save this one, have been good. Expensive, but good. This was the worst renting experience I have had anywhere. Rent a car anywhere but Hertz at Watsonville.

Nice airport to get to Santa Cruz and area, good transient tie down, lots of fun GA traffic on nice weather days but stay away from the Hertz car rental. Their service is just slightly worse that horrible. Enterprise gives much better service here.
