Stopped here enroute from JAC to DPA based on comments posted on this site. I was not disappointed! Airport was excellent. Terminal building was new and well appointed with comfortable seating, weather and, most important, very friendly, helpful people. "Self serve" fuel was really taxing to the pump and having someone come out, fuel you and then bring the plane to the terminal. Price was as advertised with no extra fees. I recommend this airport and FBO very highly!

From Jim Loach on 19-Sep-2009
My first stop at YKN in quite a while. The FBO has moved to the "old brick commercial terminal" which they have turned into a very fine, functional, relaxing GA Terminal. There are comfortable lounge chairs, TV, nice vending area, and a PC for flight planning. Excellent Pilot Lounge suitable even for a "weather delay" overnighter! Service is outstanding and as others have said, I parked in front of the terminal and the Bonanza was fueled and returned right in front of the Terminal. Fuel prices were as posted on AirNav. Stop when you come this way. These are great Folks and YKN has become a really nice place for GA.

From Chris Hand on 16-Aug-2009
My son and I made Yankton our first fuel stop for the return flight from Oshkosh to CA this year and I echo the other comments on this site - the Carlson Aviation FBO provided outstanding service and this airport will definitely be a stop for me on any cross country flights that bring me through this area.

From Jeff Soares on 13-Aug-2009
We landed at Carlson on our way home to California from Oshkosh due to a storm. I can't believe how lucky we were to land there. We were greeted with Sloppy Joes, chips, drinks, cheesecake and more. They put my plane in a hangar, gave us their van, made sure there was vacancy at the local hotel, fueled my plane (cheapest fuel between CA and WI). My plane was waiting for me right out the doors the next morning. This is also the most comfortable FBO I have ever been to. Numerous recliner chairs to catch a nap. A TV with two recliners to fall asleep in too. I look forward to landing there again.

From Robert Hornbaker on 10-Aug-2009
Stopped here for fuel on a JAC to CMI flight, had used AirNav to find the shortest and lowest cost refuel stops and found YKN with low fuel prices and great comments from other pilots. This refuel stop was only ~2 minutes farther than a direct route and well worth it for the price and service. We happened to be flying through on the Oshkosh weekend special and got the $3.55 fuel and free lunch. They have recently upgraded their lounge with new furniture, lazy boy chairs with blankets, and TV so it's a great place for service, fuel price, as well as for catching a 20 minute nap midway through a long cross country flight.

From Roy Knight on 05-Aug-2009
Stopped for fuel on the way back from Oshkosh. Prices were great, service was wonderful, sandwich and coke were just what the doctor ordered and the hospitality was priceless.

From Dale Christensen on 05-Aug-2009
We scored BIG by discovering Carlson Aviation at Yankton on our way back home from Oshkosh. Upon landing I could not stop commenting to my friend about how beautiful and manicured the airport and runways were, and then as we taxied to the pump two cheerful young men came out to welcome us. It was self-serve, but the guys pumped the fuel for us anyway and told us to go into the FBO and get some food. Just before entering, Gary came out to welcome us in and ushered us right to the hotdogs, homemade brownies, and ice cold drinks. When we got ready to go, the two young men had towed the aircraft right in front of the FBO instead of having to walk to the fuel pump. The service was extraordinary and genuine. We had a very nice visit, and it truly was a highlight of our trip. For me, a lot of the fun of flying is visiting new places and airports, and Yankton is now a favorite place. I will definitely be stopping there again the next time I go that direction. Thank you Gary and Katie!

From Ted Waltman on 05-Aug-2009
Gary & Katie run an OUTSTANDING business! Simply the most friendly, most customer service oriented business (of any type) that I've had the pleasure of visiting this year. GREAT, GREAT place to visit! Highly recommended!!

From Mike Brannigan on 04-Aug-2009
We stopped in randomly on the return from OSH -- imagine our surprise at hot dogs, snacks, sodas, donuts, coffee, and the red carpet treatment. We availed ourselves (7 of us!) to the hospitality. Prompt and friendly line service also, plus they pulled our 2 planes right out front. The only thing left they could've done was offer us some foot massages -- what a fortuitous and unexpectedly wonderful stop! Thanks everyone!!!

From Lee Jay Bergmann on 04-Aug-2009
What a treat stopping here. From Seattle to Oshkosh and back this was our best experience. The people and service was top notch. They provided food, drinks, and inexpensive fuel and made you feel very welcome. I am looking forward to stopping again and will go out of my way to do so.

From D. Brown on 03-Aug-2009
Stopped at Carlson Aviation in Yankton going to Oshkosh and again returning home. I could not have been treated better, a real class act. It's clear why they have been named South Dakota's airport of the year this year. I look forward to my next stop at Carlson.

From Dan MacDonald on 29-Jul-2009
Stopped for fuel today due to the low price on AirNav.Com Because of Oshkosh they were serving free sloppy joes with free pop or water - wow! And when done fueling my plane they towed it up to the terminal so I wouldn't have to walk so far, even though I did not ask for this! Lots of planes were coming and going, due to the good fuel price. Great fuel stop, nice facilities.

From William Hopkins on 24-Jul-2009
Great place! Service was outstanding. Fuel prices best I've seen in a long time. Katie and Gary really make you feel welcome. Well worth making a stop.

From Mark Sand on 14-Jun-2009
This is an absolutely first class operation! I needed a few VFR sectionals which Gary & Katie did not have. Instead, they gave me an expired atlas of sectionals for the entire Eastern half of the US! An expired VFR sectional is certainly better than no sectional at all! Thanks Gary & Katie!

From Joe Albertson on 13-Jun-2009
I had the pleasure of stopping at YKN on June 11 and then again on June 12, 2009. Carlson Aviation is a first class operation. Nice facility and wonderful people. Reasonable fuel prices. It now ranks in my "top 5" list of FBOs nationwide.

From Tom Tobin on 16-Apr-2009
Katie and Gary Carlson are the best you'll ever find! I can't say enough good about these folks - you'll just have to see for yourselves. I was based here for several days, got an oil change - very easy on the wallet and was treated like a family member. It was also a real treat talking to Katie, who like me is from the Boston, MA area. You will thoroughly enjoy this stop, whether just passing through or staying awhile - put Yankton on your list!!

From Providence College on 10-Mar-2009
WOW! Gary and Katie are awesome! We got caught with weather on our way home to Canada, and Carlson Aviation and the people of Yankton really pulled out all the stops to ensure that we were taken care of. Lots of attractions in Yankton to keep one busy! Going to Carlson is like another home, and Gary and Katie's efforts are much more than appreciated. To anyone stopping here be prepared for a returning to the roots of GA! Thanks so much everyone!!!

From Brian Staheli on 08-Oct-2008
KYKN has a wonderful runway, very nice facilities and service that can not be topped. I only regret that I can not hang out longer each time that I pass through.

From Warren Levin on 20-Sep-2008
I can only ditto other fine comments about this FBO, landed here on my way home from RAP going to RAC. Fuel was a little less than a lot of places we stopped. FBO was clean and everyone was friendly. I would recommend stopping here to anyone.

From Russell Williams on 09-Sep-2008
A great FBO and airport. Well maintained, an FBO lounge with comfy sofas, wireless access, a new hangar if you want a spot for the night, and super-friendly operators. Yankton is antique airplane friendly. Thanks Gary and crew!

From Joseph P Judge Jr. on 21-Aug-2008
We stopped on our way back from Oshkosh - they are always the CLEANEST and most courteous FBO stop we've ever made. Thank you for the excellent service, sparkling clean accommodatins, great food and superb customer service. You are the best!!!

From Greg Johnson on 07-Aug-2008
Stopped for fuel on way to Oshkosh, planned on overnight stay with 2 other aircraft we were joining up with who couldn't make it so went on our way but Gary and his lovely better half just made us feel right at home with refreshments, handling our needs and couldn't have been friendlier! Locals were standing outside when landing and taking off - quite the enthusiasts so we gave 'em a little "extra" takeoff performance to make their day. Suggested to friends at Oshkosh they stop by on their way back to California, which they did and reported the best airport experience - were fed, libated, and fueled. Thanks to all for their enthusiasm.

From Jeff Burton on 27-Jul-2008
Can't tell you what a pleasant experience is was stopping at Yankton for fuel today in our Mooney on our way from Utah eastbound! This is everything a great airport should be - well kept airport, the best price on fuel of our entire trip, but best of all, Gary's hospitality was outstanding. We enjoyed a tasty and complimentary pork sandwich lunch, a comfortable lounge and genuinely friendly people of the sort that make flying fun. We'll make it a point to stop here in the future. Thanks again Gary and friends.

From S. Guru Prasad on 18-Jul-2008
I have been flying to YKN for the past 10 years. It is breath of fresh air to have an FBO, which is clean, well furnished, and a great place to stop for fuel and food. Operators, Gary and Kate Carlson are very caring individuals who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. They are extremely helpful and friendly. I travel all over the Midwestern airports. This facility is unique which blends country charm with modern amenities. Facility like this was long over due at YKN. I congratulate the city on its choice of the present operators. Keep up the good service

From Scott Dean on 11-Jul-2008
Great service and great people. Good fuel prices make this an all around great spot to stop!

From Kurt J Bossert on 01-Jul-2008
This is hospitality you will only find in South Dakota. I can only agree with the other comments. If you are in the area, this is the place to plan your fuel stop. Gary Carlson of Carlson Aviation treated us like one of the family. We stopped in on June 27th to sit out a frontal passage. It was the right choice. Thanks Gary!

From Jeffrey Matar on 01-Jul-2008
Gary and Katie Carlson are just what aviation needs more of and the city of Yankton, SD is fortunate to have them. I arrived on a weekday afternoon and had spoken with the Carlson’s' a week prior and had given them no actual date or time of arrival. I made an initial call 10 minutes from touchdown and was met immediately and my aircraft was in a hangar within 10 minutes after I finished unloading it. The airport is in excellent condition with a newer, clean terminal and ample ramp space and minimal congestion. The airport also has an ILS approach. Yankton in a diamond in the rough, with the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area providing good fishing, camping and waterspouts, along with many outdoor activities for adults and children alike. The town is friendly and clean and Gary and Katie Carlson make this a great place to fly into and visit!

From Paul Groff on 28-Jun-2008
Stopped at YKN to avoid a front going through. Mr./Mrs Carlson couldn't have treated me better if I were a rich uncle. Helped me put my CT in a hangar so rain wouldn't get in. Please, stop in when/if you get the chance so we can keep these wonderful people in business!!!

From Tim Swiader on 19-Jun-2008
Gary is awesome. He did the fuel thing for me as described below. HOWEVER, I have six-year-old daughter and Gary was great with her. Even gave her a handmade wooden airplane. She loved it. We stopped on the way back just because of the service. I could have fueled prior to departure. HIGHLY recommend!!!

From Nick Faith on 18-Jun-2008
Absolutely great service. Gary and his wife were very helpful, hangared our airport quickly with an approaching storm. Great prices for Jet A, definitely recommended for fuel stop or RON. They offered to come open up if we needed to leave early in the morning.

From David Wilkinson on 17-Jun-2008
I never give my feed back on sites like this, yet there is always a first time. I need to say that Gary and Katie offer the very best in service. Fuel prices are some of the best around the state. My alternator went out and Gary had it fixed with in the hour. Very Very reasonable $$. Stop by and see for yourself.

From Steve Benner on 13-Jun-2008
We spend a lot of time on the road, and have the opportunity to sample a lot of FBO's - good and bad. Gary provided some of the friendliest service we have received anywhere. Gary greeted us on Unicom, met us at the pumps, gave us a ride to the terminal, offered us hangar space if we needed it, and offered us a ride to town. And, he has the best fuel price in the region. Highly recommended.

From Dale Terwedo on 01-Apr-2008
What can I say but agree wit the other comments. If you are in the area, you MUST stop in and say hi to Gary and Katie. We were in on March 27 and their friendliness and great service were worth coming back for. Thanks guys!

From Brian D Hoff on 03-Jan-2008
We've stopped here several times in the last year. Nice runway's, lowest fuel prices within 100 miles, a large hangar open and free to transient aircraft if weather hits, and almost always refreshments on the counter. But what really makes this place stand out is Gary and Katie's friendly hospitality. By the way, my two little girls love the Christmas reindeers you gave them--THANKS!

From Marv Miniely on 02-Nov-2007
I arrived from Canada after hours, tied down my RV6A, checked my email using the wireless connection, and crashed on the very comfortable couch in the Pilot Lounge. The friendly manner of Katie and Gary Carlson made my short stay a marvelous introduction to flying in the USA. Thanks a ton.

From William Maxwell on 23-Oct-2007
Stopped in Yankton in early summer en route to O’Neil NE. Extremely impressed with the service I received. Stopped in again and RON on October 20 2007. Facilities are outstanding and the fine folks at Carlson Aviation (Gary and Katie Carlson) are terrific! As a long time career aviator, the service and hospitality provided by the Carlson’s are among the finest I have experienced anywhere. Plan Yankton stop for quick turn, great service and terrific hospitality!

From Randy Cockrum on 11-Oct-2007
What can I say that hasn't already been said in the previous comments? Great fuel stop and RON. Thanks Gary & Katie. We'll be back.

From Peter Bodie on 26-Sep-2007
Stopped by Chan Gurney as first leg on return from Oshkosh back to California. We were surprised at how we were welcomed. They had hot dogs soda and chips ready when we landed. FBOs like this make cross country trips really memorable. This airport is a must stop.

From Steve Snider on 13-Aug-2007
Stopped by Chan Gurney as first leg on return from Oshkosh. Even though it was a late night arrival, we were surprised at the degree to which this FBO put out to make visitors welcome. The extra effort was most appreciated, and Yankton is now on the "must return" list!

From Lawrence Long on 08-Aug-2007
Excellent place to stop into. My wife & I stopped in on July 23, 2007 and Gary & Katie Carlson treated us very nicely. Even towed my Cherokee to the gas pump and filled it with my credit card and then towed it to the front door. Good price on fuel, too. Treated us like family. Will definitely stop in again if in area.

From Tom Neale on 06-Aug-2007
Stopped in Yankton for a family reunion for a few days. Gary and Katie were very helpful and friendly. Plenty of old-fashioned service! Thank you!

From Richard Suffoletto on 02-Aug-2007
I stopped for gas on the way back from OSH and ended up staying three days because of plane problems. Gary and Katie went out of their way to help me fix my plane and get me on my way ASAP. A great place to stop with a good hotel, good food and good prices near by. The hospitality is the best...

From Larry and Judy Kensington. on 01-Aug-2007
Stopped at YKN for fuel en route to 9D9 Michigan from Rapid City. We were cordially greeted on Unicom with the offer of complimentary water, sodas, and hot dogs. Gary Carlson greeted us at the pumps where fuel was lowest on our entire route out and back. Enjoyed their hospitality and use of the facilities, and then discovered a dead RH mag on run up. Unbelievable concern and service, Gary was on the phone to Lincoln County arranging for parts, this was at 1:30PM local on 7/30, made arrangements for the mag to be rebuilt that same evening, provided a courtesy car, made our room reservations for us, all met back at the terminal 8AM Tuesday, and yes there was fresh hot coffee and donuts waiting for all the overnight pilots. In less than an hour, mag was installed, run up and tested; we were in the air before 9:30AM! Friendliest airport or FBO we've ever had the pleasure of visiting. If you're ever near Yankton you need to stop and see the Carlson's.

From Bill Cola on 26-Jul-2007
I stopped in on the way home from OSH, and was pleasantly surprised to find the warmest hospitality and finest service combined with the best fuel price around! I will certainly be back...

From Forrest Holly on 07-Jul-2007
Ms. Carlson was on the Unicom welcoming us to the field and giving instructions on the self-serve while we were still taxiing. Then she welcomed us into the FBO for fresh coffee and doughnuts. A very nice experience. Advisory: If it's not already fixed, you have to pull the right side of the 100LL self-serve door out far enough to reach in and pull on the left-hand rod to manually release the left-hand latch.

From Steve Johnson on 26-Jun-2007
My wife Jan and I stopped in and based our helicopter in Yankton for a few days on a cross-country trip from Indiana to Colorado. We were treated to outstanding service and great prices on fuel and hangar space. Gary and Katie sure know how to make you feel welcome and were always eager to help in any way they could. Thank-you Carlson Aviation! We hope to be back.

From Ken Corcoran on 12-Jun-2007
June 8 arrived at YKN for the weekend and received the "red carpet" treatment from Katie and Gary - without the red carpet. Even thought it was Friday evening, they managed to arrange a car for us. Great service from wonderfully accommodating people. Hope to visit again.

From Keith Nelson on 03-Jun-2007
The folks at Carlson Aviation are so helpful. I would recommend this stop for anyone. They came in early for me and stayed late for us. Even put plane in a hangar because of bad weather. Thanks Carlson.

From Mike Baun on 24-May-2007
Stopped for fuel and a bite to eat on a ferry trip from Pennsylvania to Oregon. First comment, they were the only Unicom for 100 miles to answer me when I was looking for restaurants on or near the field. They also pumped my fuel even though it is self-serve, and they owner gave us a ride to eat when the crew car was out. Local pilots hanging around were very friendly and gave suggestions on routes to take across the mountains. Most friendly FBO I've been to in years.

From Rich Fisher on 12-May-2007
Excellent service and wonderful facilities at Yankton. Very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable owners of the FBO. The city has invested handsomely in this airport. Even the courtesy car is upscale. Plan on a very nice layover here.

From Shane Osborn on 09-May-2007
Gary and Katie run their operation the way it used to be. Excellent service, fair prices and all done with Midwest warmth and a smile. Their fuel prices are the reason to give them a try; their service is the reason you'll be back!

From Kirk Kavanagh on 07-May-2007
Great facility and excellent service. We arrived IFR on a rainy day; were met at the pump and promptly topped off as soon as Gary transported my passengers to the terminal so they didn't have to walk in the rain. Very considerate and helpful as well as the best fuel price in the area.

From Brian R. Barber on 30-Apr-2007
All I can say is Thank you, Thank you! We fly into KYKN approximately twice a month. The level of customer service has sky rocketed. Having cars ready when we land, greeted by Gary & Katie by name, coffee, donuts. Most important from a crew standpoint is a comfortable clean user-friendly lounge. The wireless Internet is key to productivity. I applaud the City of Yankton, Carlson Aviation.... Thank You!! It's about time!!

From Steve Baxter on 25-Apr-2007
I stopped in YKN the other day to drop off some freight and Carlson Aviation was very helpful and attentive. They have an excellent attitude and are great people. I highly recommend you stop through fuel prices are very affordable.

From Steve Baxter on 21-Apr-2007
We stopped in there on 4/19/07 and Carlson Aviation was very friendly and attentive to our needs. Their fuel prices are very competitive and customer service is outstanding. The owners are committed to quality service and a "can do" attitude; they will definitely be around for the long haul. I would highly recommend stopping through YKN for fuel at Carlson Aviation.

From David Schmutzler on 30-Mar-2007
Stopped here for fuel today on a long cross-county. Hospitality was superb and a variety of cookies next to the coffee pot. My part in the assisted fueling was to put the credit card in the machine.... Gary did the rest. Price of fuel reasonable. The three of us on board enjoyed the enthusiasm of these new owners.

From Rod Nohr on 25-Feb-2007
Hi, Gary Carlson and his wife are the new FBO owners/managers at the Yankton Airport. They got the FBO contract on Feb.1 and doing a nice job on starting a new FBO.. Great fuel prices..... Slip

From Malcolm Ford on 02-Feb-2007
Congratulations to the City of Yankton for making Carlson Aviation a part of this fine airport. I own 2 planes, and can personally attest to Gary's dedication to detail in maintaining my Cessna 172M when he was here in the US Virgin Islands. Together with his wife Katie, I know they will bring a spirit of exceptional service to their Yankton customers, and the flying public. Malcolm W. Ford, St Thomas VI 00805 340-775-3318
