Excellent access to Death Valley National Park. Highly recommend renting a jeep from Farabee's Jeep Rental (877-970-5337). The owner left a jeep for us at the airport. The in and out is faster than at a high end FBO. The jeep will give you access to the whole park. We have stayed at both the Inn and the Ranch, when there was no vacancy at the Inn. Both provide excellent service. We have not purchased fuel recently. Bring your own tiedown ropes.

This is one of my favorite winter trips! The phone is still broke but you'll get good cell phone reception. The number to call is on the wall just outside the bathroom. The ranch is not a bad walk but you'll need a ride to the Inn. Folks, this is not a fuel stop!!! Getting fuel takes some time and it's pricy. Outstanding Sunday Brunch at the Inn. For dinner great steak's at the ranch.

Quite airport for darn sure. If you land taxi to the tanks before tying down. The Chevron station just turns on the pumps and you do the pumping. I made the mistake of tying down first and decided to fuel on the way out. Problem is they do not start fueling planes until after 9am. We really needed to get out before 8 due to weather, the attendant locked up the station and made a special trip down to get us fueled. We did not meet an unfriendly person during our entire stay at Furnace Creek. We rented a Jeep at Farabees and the owner suggested we just keep it over night and use it to get our gear to the plane. If the jeep was not at his lot in the morning he would just assume it was at the airport. And it was like this everywhere we visited. If you stay at the Ranch or Inn they will shuttle you within about 10 minutes of calling. Beware of HEAVY winds, we arrived about noon to calm winds and within an hour it was a constant 30 kts often gusting to over 40.

Nothing beats the scenery, solitude, and 200 mi. Visibility of Death Valley. Flew in on Sunday 11/14. Got an easy lift to the Reservation bldg. in the courtesy van. Had 5 bars on the iPhone. Talked to the Chevron dealer who met me back at the field for 100LL at a price below what he was charging for 87 mogas. Avoid the restroom on the field, however, until the water is hooked back up. I have been telling friends for decades to avoid the "horrors" of Death Valley so I could suffer all by myself, but the word has been out for quite some time now, so solitude must be earned, but a fly-in is still a memorable event.

The runway is being re-surfaced this week, but it was already in excellent condition when I was there over the weekend. Bring your own ropes to attach to the cables provided. Only vehicle rental option is Farabee's Jeep Rentals - 877-970-5337 (or 760-786-9872). $175 for 24 hours and he will pick you up at the airport. Neat area attractions include Mosaic Canyon, Titus Canyon, Badwater, and Artist's Drive. It was a lot more scenic than I thought it would be, and my wife enjoyed it as well. Nice winter fly-in destination if you enjoy unique and unusual scenery/geology.

Stopped in for a passenger drop off. House phone inop. Spoke with Glen at the DNP office. He thought the house phone had been fixed. I assured him it was inoperative on Jan 7th. He said he would pass the request along. Don't forget quarters for the pay phone. Never could figure out how to get fuel. Rwy and taxiway in nice shape.

Flew to L06 from SBP via MHV today. Friendly controllers and easy crossings of MOAs and Restricted Areas. Surface of runway and apron in decent shape. Very few tie down ropes (bring your own). Picked up 40 Gal. Of fuel @ $4.50. They did not want to supply more, since they had little fuel left in their trailer at that time. Since I did not call the shuttle bus (need exercise), to get fuel, I had to go the ranch's Chevron gas station, pay in advance (credit card accepted), and was then driven back to the apron by the guy assisting me with the self serve (he operated the pump).

Didn't see any fuel. Runway a little bumpy. As mentioned earlier, the house phone is still broken. After calling the ranch a van showed up within 5 minutes. We went to have lunch at the Inn. 2 sandwiches and sodas for $50. Nice trip, not nice enough to return.

Ring down phone still inop! Furnace Creek transport brought us back. Walked in. They blame National Park Service for not correcting the phone. Food good at ranch. Service so so!

The "house phone" at the airport (used to call the Furnace Creek Inn, or the ranch) doesn't work. Cell phones don't work either in Furnace Creek. There is a pay phone (remember those?) at the airport. So if you have lots of change (50 cents for a local call), or a calling card (remember those?), you can use the pay phone to call for a van ride to the inn, or to call for fuel. Sunday brunch at the Inn is very good worth the trip.

Refueled here in Aug in route to UT- was concerned about getting to field prior to 3 pm. I definitely recommend phoning first prior to relying on the fuel availability here. Lineman was friendly and fast- noted I was his first refuel in about a month!
