I called ahead to inquire about local operations and was met with a great "happy to have you" attitude. This nice little airport is the kind of mythical place you hear hangar stories about; open, friendly and fair prices. If you are not comfortable with shorter runways or tight patterns - land across town at CIC.

Don't worry about the "prior permission required" NOTAM or the "R" on the runway. Ranchaero is still open. They've just had some problems with CalTrans and some trees, apparently. We stopped by on Sunday 3-16-08. Avgas was $4.35, as advertised. Couldn't get a courtesy car, but downtown is an easy 25-minute walk along Oak Road (just head east along the road that runs by the airport and it'll take you right into downtown for a tasty lunch.) We'll be back soon!

Great little airport, < 2 miles from Chico State and a courtesy car to boot. Gary is great. Short runway with orchard all around. Don't worry about the "R", but do fly a good pattern and check your takeoff distances.

Regarding the Big R on the runway, we saw that and landed anyway, we asked the guy what that meant and he told us it is still open to all comers and they just have it registered restricted for tax or red tape purposes only, they still have 100LL and the fellow greeted us warmly. Very well kept little airport, don't let the big R scare you off.

Tried landing today... Big R on both ends of runway. Personnel at Oroville said he landed there and that prior permission is now required, but was also told that if you didn't get permission, it was no big deal. What's up?

The airport description said it was open to the public. I was going to land for fuel until I saw the big "R" painted on the runway threshold. Went to o37 instead.
