I've flown into VG18 several times and it's always a good experience. There are no services and the approach is "interesting". But its fun to fly into and it's a short walk to the lodge where you can get good food. Golf and skiing are nearby. This is a day VFR only airport. High winds are a no go because of the location in the hills. There is a voluntary landing fee of $5. Well worth it.

Was doing X/C training with my student pilot son in a C-172 and made him "divert" to Bryce. The weather was perfect with clear skies and, most importantly, light winds. A great airport to sharpen your skills (with many obstacles including hillside condos on both approaches). With little or no wind, arriving/departing to/from the south is my preference since the terrain is more hospitable. Be ready to go around (we did) if anything looks out of place, there's little room for error at this airport.

Flew in for a quick visit to the restaurant. The lodge facilities including ski lift and inner tube rentals are a quick walk from the runway. They request a $5 landing fee donation, which is well worth it to keep such a great little airport up and running. The recommended CTAF frequency is 122.8 and the unlighted airport closes at dusk.

Flew in on Sunday for golf. Everyone was fantastic and the golf course is in great shape. A couple thoughts: 1) Contact the email address listed on AirNav. Dick and Kevin both came out and met me and were extremely gracious and helpful. Kevin even gave me pointers during my approach from the ground by radio. 2) Watch out for winds. Even though winds at the field might be light, the ridges on both sides of the runway make for some squirrelly shifting winds. Nail the speed and altitude numbers on approach and be ready to go around - early! On takeoff, be ready for the unexpected shift in winds. Keep your climb attitude and take this departure seriously. This is a great airport and I'll come back again. While the flying is challenging - it feels great to do it and reminds us that all runways aren't 5000' long and there is a reason that we learn about planning for 50' obstacles in flight training.

Flew in for a Saturday visit with friends - great location! I did call the # listed on AirNav, press "0" and to let them know I was coming - no problem, a prompt "thank you for coming to see us". My Mooney 231 squeaked in and out with little problem, although a couple of practice short field approaches/departures before arrival wouldn't be a bad idea. Trees on both ends deserve attention. My T-Mobile service was non-existent, so plan appropriately if you need to talk w/FSS. A local gentleman and his wife lent me their cell to make a call - typical of the overall hospitality! Picked up an IFR home after a short climb - Washington Center very helpful.
