The W95 airport does not restrict parking to one night. Check with: National Park Service Ocracoke District Ranger - Kenny Ballance District Rangers Office located in Ocracoke, NC (252) 928-5111 On-Site Park Ranger - 1-252-475-8313 said the following when asked about the issue. He said "y'all come on down and park your planes as long as you want to. People rent houses for a week and park here. We even have 2-3 planes here most of the year. There is a problem up at Wright Brothers (First Flight Airport at Kill Devil Hills) - that's why they have the rule - but not here! We're glad to have ya!!!"

Last comment is correct. Park Service now has a 24 hour restriction on parking at Ocracoke. Nice new sign recently erected clearly states this. Not sure what the reason is for the restriction, but I find it hard to believe that it is necessary. Local businesses can kiss the pilot community's business goodbye. Without the prospect for an overnight stay, I see no reason to go to Ocracoke for any other reason than to hit the beach; and for that I don't need to go into town for food, lodging, etc. Maybe aviators are not a major source of revenue for the town and they can do without.... But in this economy seems foolish to scare away any customers.

Howard's is still a pretty good choice, but not as good as the old days. The Park Service has become less and less friendly, and prohibits parking an airplane more than 24 hours. This makes it impossible to fly in for a vacation. You can fly in for the day, just don't plan on staying more than one night. Amazing that the hotels on the island are not up in arms over this. The Park service seems determined to destroy tourism here, one way or another.

We arrived at W95 and called Howard's Pub by telephone on July 4, 2011. They were at the airport to pick us up before we could tie our airplane down. Great food and service. I would recommend the eatery to anyone stopping in at Ocracoke Island Airport.

Ocracoke is like a tropical island paradise in North Carolina and Howard's Pub is the place for exceptional food and service. By service I mean they will pick you up and carry you back to the airport if they have the staff available, which they usually do. They don't always hear the Unicom so if you don't get an answer just call them on the phone when you land. If you arrive around noon you will probably have to wait a bit for a table. This is a testament to just how good the food is. If you don't get a ride, don't sweat it. Howard's Pub is only about a half mile from the airport and there is a sidewalk. It is definitely worth the walk. After lunch don't miss a stroll into the village and harbor front (another half mile).

I called to make sure that they were open the woman who answered the phone said that the shuttle was broken but they would see what they could do. With the ATC issues I didn't get a chance to call in the air and couldn't raise them on the ground. It is only 1/2-mile walk so we walked down and back. There is a paved sidewalk there and it was a nice walk. My wife had shrimp and crab cakes and loved them. I am not a seafood person so I had the burger that was horrible. In their defense it is a seafood place so I wasn't expecting a gourmet burger but this one was just plain bad. It was one of those out of the freezer premade ones that is made of who knows what. I could only eat half of it and it haunted me the 1.3 back to KCPK. We had one win and one loss for dinner so I'm not sure if we will be back or not. There is another place to eat across the street from them so you aren't locked in if you make the trip.

Jan 29, 2011, Howard's Pub has a "closed until March" sign out front. We ate at the Creekside Cafe. Great service, and good food, a little farther down the road toward town. Response from Ann Warner, Howard's Pub & Raw Bar Restaurant Howard's Pub is reopening for the 2011 season on Friday, March 4. Open everyday 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. serving lunch and dinner. We look forward to you visiting! Call us on 122.9 or 252-928-4441 for a ride.

Always one of my favorites. It was busy toddy. We flew down from DC and didn't hear anyone on Unicom until we were 10 miles out and then all of a sudden we were #4! The manger from Howard's Pub took the first batch while I was tying down. She was back just in time. What great service. Great lunch and then a walk around town before a lift back to the airport. Really it is only a half-mile walk so you don't need a lift but it was fun.

We flew in to W95 5/1 on our way back to Maine from Hilton Head. Hearing the plane in front of us hailing Howard's, and having never been to Ocracoke before, we imitated them. The pick up was prompt and the driver spent time with us once we got to the restaurant to help us get the most of an overnight stay. Food and beverages were outstanding. A treat and we will be back to W95.

Park Service has added a nice 6' wide asphalt walkway, separated from the main road by at least an additional 6' grass buffer, which runs from the airport alongside the road back into the edge of the village. Saw someone on folding bike utilizing it to get back to airport. We walked it instead of calling the shuttle.

Although I didn't stop by... Howard's staff listened to and answered the Unicom for another pilot in the pattern who was looking for food. They picked him up just after we landed. When I go back I'll give Howard’s a try!

I stopped at W95 on Oct 21 2009 on a pleasure flight of the outerbanks. I called Howard's Pub on 122.9 about 10 minutes out and they were waiting when I landed. We had a great lunch at Howard's and the ride back to the airport was just as prompt. I can't wait for a return trip to Ocracoke.

Happy to report the radio is back on line; call Howard's Pub on 122.9. Alltel and US Cellular have served Ocracoke for years, and Verizon has more recently upgraded to cover the island. Ferry service to and from Ocracoke is suffering from budget cuts, so enjoy the luxury of flying in for lunch or dinner or just a walk on the beach.

Had a great Father's Day weekend. First time, but Howard's A/C Radio is not in service, but was able to call them via cell phone. Only Verizon seems to work. They were out within 5 minutes to pick us up and we had a great lunch. We walked the village and they took us back so we could enjoy the beach. Also, if you ever have any "battery" issues, call Jesse at Beach Towing, he has a battery cart to give you a jump....

I have flown a Piper Dakota to Ocracoke many times, and it is a great day excursion. There is the beach nearby, and there are bikes to rent. Howard's is good, and the people are interesting (and nice). YOU MUST BRING INSECT REPELLANT, or you will regret it. These are the biggest mosquitoes in the world...

Folks from Howard's Pub picked us up rapidly after we phoned from the airport. They did not get my call on 122.9, but everything worked out great. Good food and service. The shelter at the airport has been completed. My Verizon phone (in Roaming Mode) worked at the airport and even better in town.

I don't mean to be the contrarian to the other reviews, but I need to voice my opinion. I have been to Howard’s about 5-6 times in the last couple of years. They are super convenient to the airport, and come out to pick you up promptly. The people picking us up have always been really nice. But the last few times I have been there, they have been problems with the promptness of the wait staff, to food preparation problems, and problems with advertised pricing. The last two times I have been there, the people I took there were not pleased. In the future, I plan on walking the 1/2-mile down the road, renting a bike, and going to some of the establishments down the road. I also get a little irked paying nearly $20 a pound for shrimp, and it cost extra to get hushpuppies, bread, or fries. On the positive side, there will be no other place on the island to get alcohol like you can at Howard’s, although I never get to drink since I'm the pilot.
