Please note that 21N is short and the prevailing winds in the summer are from the south. This means landing on runway 19 which is over trees, and there usually is a sinkhole right before the tees. There is about 200 ft of grass overrun on this runway. On the other hand, should you decide to land with the wind to your back and avoid those dreaded trees, there is a ditch 2201 ft off the end of runway 1. The skid marks at the end of the runway attest to the folly of trying this method. Simply stated, IF YOU DON'T LIKE LANDING OVER TREES, DONT LAND AT MATTITUCK!!! Practice with an instructor before you try for yourself or land at nearby FOK, which has 3 massive runways. Use FOK's ASOS on 119.25 to get a sense of the winds. Every accident at this airport over the past 5 yrs has been a result of a failed tailwind landing. Please don't add to it. With proper technique, landing at this airport is easy. Enjoy the beautiful North Fork!
