K09 is in a very pretty area: Piseco Lake on the approach to runway 04, Adirondack Park to the east. The airport is well maintained but there are essentially no services available: BEWARE there is a $50 CALL OUT FEE for the $5.50/gallon 100LL; no bathroom facilities. I would recommend Glenns Falls to the east ($5.94/gal 100LL SS or FS) or Lake Placid to the north.

Where else can you go cross-county skiing (or hiking) by airplane? There is a 10k NYS DEC Nordic trail that starts and ends at the airport. The trailhead sign-in kiosk is by the FBO building. The trailhead is actually on the southeast side of the field at about the mid-point of the runway. I would describe it as a longish 10k. It took my companion and me over three hours to finish it. Not hard skiing, but through the woods. No big hills, but a lot of little ones. There are no great vistas, but it is very quiet and beautiful in the woods. The trail ends on the northwest side of the field at about the mid point of the runway. There were strong cross winds today and, as advertised, we had an exciting arrival and departure.

We flew in to Piseco on Friday afternoon with no hotel reservations. The airport is in great shape with a friendly manager. After topping off the tanks, he recommended a couple of places where we might find lodging, and we wound up staying 3 miles away at the Oxbow Lake Motel. The hotel was clean, comfortable and right on Oxbow Lake. The owners, Betsy and Jay, are very nice. The area is beautiful and we will definitely be returning. The winds can be tricky because of the mountains, but otherwise this is a great little airport.

Visited on Sun Jul 12. 100LL was $4.11/gal. Airport manager was friendly, and the place was beautifully kept.
