Flew in to CIU with a C-172. The airport is a former Strategic Air Command B-52 base (Kincheloe AFB), so you have a huge runway and hangars built for F-106 fighter jets at your disposal. Not a busy airport, either, and so you'll essentially have it to yourself. The FBO is fine, but a word of caution: if you need access to your aircraft on the ramp after hours, you'll be out of luck. The gates are locked; there is no pass code and absolutely nobody around (and the adjacent prisons will add to that 'oh #$##' feeling you will have at that moment). So, get back before the FBO closes, otherwise you'll be spending another night there. Check out the nearby Deli Queen for a good sandwich. Both the US & Canada Sault Ste. Maries are well worth a visit.
