UPDATE: KOPN now has three very nice late model full size crew cars replacing the older vans. They are keyless entry so if you divert for weather and get on the ground after hours, call Mitch for the door code and you are set. Keys are always above the drivers side visor.

This is the airport that us locals located on the south side of the Atlanta TCA use. ALWAYS the cheapest gas around by far.

I landed at Thomaston for gas and had a brake problem on my DC-3. I borrowed a van from Mitch and drove back to my hangar and got a mechanic, a truck, tools, and a jack. By the time I got back to Thomaston Airport manager Mitch Ellerbee had a forklift waiting and unloaded the jack for me. He and another airport employee waited until 9pm - off the clock - for us to finish and get gone. Neither one would accept any money for their time or equipment. KOPN has a long runway, ILS, approach lights, 3 free courtesy cars, and a staff that deserve medals. Also, KOPN is always the cheapest gas.

We flew over to Thomaston-Upton last Wednesday just to check out the airport and pick up some fuel. Benny Tucker met us at the plane and showed us where the self-service pump was located. Even though it was 17:45, and they close up at 18:00, he took the time to tell us about all of the local restaurant options and gave us one of the airport vans so we could go get something to eat. Everyone we talked to was extremely friendly and the facilities were top notch. Great experience!

I had the pleasure of my first visit to the Thomaston-Upson County Airport last Thursday night on my flight to New Orleans. A line of approaching thunderstorms mandated a stop for the night. I had a fouled plug, and wanted it checked. I approached the locked terminal, but called the nearby Days Inn and the owner insisted on picking me up, in about 15 min. he arrived. He insisted on taking me to the local Taco Bell, for a late dinner. He would not take a dime for the transportation, and with a room discount ($ 62) had a comfortable night's sleep. In the AM, called the terminal and spoke to the airport manager, Mitch Ellerbee, he insisted on picking me up, meanwhile he gave me the number of the local maintenance contact, Ken Ellis of Performance Aviation. He came in to look at my plane. They could not have been more accommodating - Ken would not charge me for changing a couple of plugs and I was off to New Orleans in clear weather by 10 am. What a great experience! I advise you all to go out of your way to stop at KOPN!

One of the best airports I have landed at. People are extremely nice and helpful. Great fuel prices and I will make it stop anytime I am through the area.

Great fuel stop on way back from KISM to Canada, except for the routing you get to continue around Atlanta northward. Friendly airport manager and for the extra $.20, let them pump the fuel.

I had to put down yesterday due to weather and OPN was the nearest so I landed there. I must tell you all how nice Travis and the people there were. They helped me in everyway possible and even had a cup of coffee ready as it was down right cold and they knew I would need to get warmed up. There operation is top notch. I was given access to all the resources to get the information I needed to get back to PDK safely. This may have been my first time there, but will not be my last. In fact, I will ask my instructors to start sending our students there x-cty and approach practice. Thanks OPN, Evanthe Papastathis Skybound Aviation

This place is a must stop. Mitch fueled my Bonanza from his fuel truck for self-service price. The windshield was covered with frost all I had was a light jacket. I called ahead; he left the courtesy car out for us that night so we could get to the local motel. He has a good assortment of charts available. We will be back on our way to Sun N Fun. The price, service & courtesy are second to none.

The facilities and service just don't get any better then at OPN. Best price on fuel and friendly fast service. Even if I don't need fuel I stop by just to say hello to Travis. You'll arrive as a stranger and leave as a new friend. If you're in the area this is a must stop.

From Malcolm W Ford, St Thomas US Virgin Islands on 29-Mar-2007
Stopped by to pick up fuel, excellent and friendly service, and great prices. Mr. Travis Daniel was so helpful, and courteous.

We flew our Maule into OPN on March 24th for a day visit. Travis is a top-notch guy and met me on the ramp to offer the hospitality car for our visit and service for the AC. Terminal is very nice too. We recommend you stop at Upson for a friendly, stress fee stop. We'll be back...

From Chris Faircloth on 24-Mar-2007
Excellent place to stop. I live in South Haven Michigan and do a couple of trips a year to FD77 (Tampa area). I usually make this trip non-stop, but if have to stop this is the place to do it. Travis and Mitch were very helpful. We used a crew car for an overnight at The Jameson.

From John Luebben on 14-Mar-2007
The staff and local people are top notch. Real Southern hospitality!! I flew my Glasair down there just before sunset to get some of the cheapest fuel around Atlanta. My starter broke and they let me have the airport van overnight so I could drive home and bring back the parts the next day. 100-mile roundtrip. Really nice "hometown" airport!!! New FBO.

From John Hewitt on 13-Feb-2007
Both Mitch and Travis are just terrific. Very customer driven and highly knowledgeable and competent. The terminal is always clean, and the atmosphere is friendly.

From C Winship on 12-Feb-2007
Travis and the gang just keeps getting better and better! Great airport, lowest full service fuel around, lowest self service fuel around, absolute best customer service around. They just put a new (longer) hose on the self-service pump to make it easier for us to fuel and go. I just wish I lived closer so I could be based there. This FBO REALLY appreciates your business and it shows!!

From Paul & Mary Sheriff from Missouri on 08-Feb-2007
Many thanks to Travis, as others have already said the service is one of the best in our country. As we travel cross-country in our "Colt" its amazing the wide diversity of what hospitality really means. This group should hold seminars for others on how it’s done.

What a very nice facility. Crew car was warmed up and running. Very friendly people and great fuel price.

Great FBO with friendly people and a great facility

Stopped overnight due to weather at destination. Service was excellent; airport car was available to go to a local motel. Definitely stop here again!

From Ken Shaw on 19-Nov-2006
I always make this a favorite stop between Chicago and Ft. Myers. The folks there are super and the fuel price is cheapest around. Small airport with a nice ILS approach plus Atlanta ATC is great. Quick and friendly service, nice flight planning room. It's only a 3-minute drive into town for a bite to eat and they usually have a car available. Skydive Atlanta jumps from there so keep an eye out on the fair weather weekends but it's not too terribly bad. I'd certainly recommended this for a stop.

From David Cason on 21-Oct-2006
Planned stop on return trip from LCQ to HSV. Had electrical problems and received great assistance from Mitch and Tommy getting me back in the air. Highly recommend this stop - good fuel prices, great staff, and nice facilities.

From Bill Kinard on 20-Oct-2006
These guys know what customer service really mean! Great fuel price with the addition of the self-service. Kudos to Travis and Mitch, keep up the good work.

From William Martin on 04-Sep-2006
Another great turn around. Many thanks to Travis for his excellent service on a day when the airport was supposed to closed. OPN will get all my business. Thanks again.

From Lyle Prouse on 29-Jun-2006
Hmmm.. There should have been an earlier comment from me here but I don't see it. Mitch and Travis are two of the finest and most accommodating gents in the FBO biz. They've helped me out twice, big-time, when I had to divert into OPN due to wx at 7 Lakes airport. They couldn't be nicer and this is a GREAT place to stop for fair, friendly, and honest service!

From Greg Burris on 09-Jun-2006
June 3rd stop on Saturday. Found OPN on AirNav price-flight plan. Skydivers were falling out of the sky on the radio like rain!! Line crew returned radio call directed us in. 100 plus jumpers very organized. The jump club cooked and sold real hamburgers on the ramp great fun sat watched the skydivers and ate. Very friendly group great stop! Great fuel price, clean neat FBO will stop again and again.

From Dan Gryder on 13-Jan-2006
Highly recommend. 3 crew cars, ILS, long runway, approach lights, clearance freq, cheap gas, airport manager is a pilot/aircraft owner. Mitch, Travis or Jim will meet your aircraft. This place sets the bar high.

From Mel Craig on 28-Dec-2005
We have stopped at OPN many times for fuel and have been treated very well. With the prices they charge it is a good stop. In and out in a heart beat. We highly recommend OPN for your next stop.

From Neal Kite on 06-Sep-2005
Stopped in on Aug 29th. Nice friendly service and clean accommodations. Courtesy car available for trips into town. Although not 24hr self serve (must call for fuel after hours) I will be back again.

From Scott Laughlin on 08-Aug-2005
Just stopped for the jet fuel price (lowest around). Very nice building. Nice folks to visit with. I know I picked a good place when a Super Cub lands in the grass as I'm taxing out! Me and my Merlin IIIC will be back.

From Don Reynolds on 30-Jul-2005
Stopped in to get a weather update and what a wonderful surprise and FBO! This has to be one of the most friendliest and accommodating places I have ever visited. The fuel prices were some of the lowest I've seen lately. We used their courtesy van to go to town for some great local BBQ. The facilities are modern and very well kept. I just wish all FBOs could be like this one. Thanks!
