Great service. I use the airport roughly 6-8 times per year. The fuel runs a little steep for some, however, after realizing the process to get it to the island, I can understand where the cost comes from. The terminal is staffed 7 days a week with airline employees, which is wonderful. They are always helpful even if you are not using their service. There is a little sandwich/coffee shop across the street, which is nice for a stop off. The local taxi service will pick you up and take you to town for a couple of bucks. I highly suggest the trip for anyone.

Used Township to spend another night at the Beaver Island Lodge, had to wait until after dark to let the wind get reasonable and Ray had the van come get us for the evening at 10 pm. The next day had to relocate the plane to Welke for the next morning for a closure to crack seal he shuttled me back and forth to do so, great people highly recommend staying with them.

Stopped for fuel in a Cessna amphibian. Credit card machine fussy. Finally worked but no receipt. Very helpful informative reception in the little terminal. Offered some cold bottled water and called Erin Motel on the waterfront of the harbor. Flew to the harbor, beached the plane easily, met by owner, Roy, secured plane on a windy afternoon and had a harbor/aircraft view room. No air conditioning. Evening meal across the street was good. Breakfast was at Franks & I agree with other comment about this food.

Flew in for a quick day trip with my son. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Set us up with a van, directions, and supplied places of interest to visit. We ended up eating at Danny Franks near downtown. If you have kids this is a great little place, but for me I could have used some better food.

The self-serve fuel was still out of order, other than that it is a great destination and the being not very busy on the island is a huge plus but it does get busier during the peak months of July & August.

SJX is a great place to stop if you want to stay away from everybody. Be careful not to confuse Beaver Island (SJX) with Welke (6Y8). Main runways are the same direction, so radio chatter can be confusing. 6Y8 is ~5 mi NE and that is where most of the people are. The charter service from Charlevoix goes to Welke and back. Not much happening at SJX, even on July 4th weekend. Be sure to check out 'Paradise Bay Coffee Shop'. (231-448-3003, 8-4 daily, closed Wednesdays) It the little building just off the east end of runway 27. Very good food. Met the owners there on a camping trip with my son. They took *very* good care of us. Note that if you want to tiedown on the concrete ramp, take your long ropes! They must get big iron up there on occasion. There are regular tiedowns between the hangars at midfield that will serve a 152, tho. Found them after I anchored the plane to the grass....

Getting in was easy. Stayed at Beaver Island Lodge. Wonderful place!! Ray from the lodge will happily pick you up from the airport. I highly recommend Beaver Island as a flying destination if you want to get away from it all. It's quiet, and beautiful. We used island hopper charters with Dan Higdon, and he toured us around the islands. The water is very clear. Dan let me drive a bit, which was great. When we went there the self-serve pump was broken (price stuck at 3.15 so it couldn't have been broken too long.) The weather room was locked, and there was no phone at the airport building. There's only one cell-phone company on the island, and it wasn't Verison. Ray let me look up the weather on the net with DUATS. Very helpful. Have fun. (the other airport, and St. Ignace have fuel. They're probably the other best options.)
