Fantastic views, especially when approaching from the river. Cheap tiedown $4, with a short walk to historic Columbia (there is a trail immediately to the left as you exit Bald Eagle Aviation if you don't want to walk on the road). If you are staying for a day or so, you can take a bus; Tuolumne County Transit to Sonora for $1.50 each way.

SS Fuel price was $.20 lower than listed on AirNav. Easy to use pumps and friendly staff. Great ice-cream freezer in lounge for a quick energy boost. Interesting activity including aerial tankers and AirCams. Pleasant and the town, within walking distance, is a nice place to stay over or enjoy a meal. Made up like the old gold-mine town it is.

Comment only on fuel prices: they raised the price just before our fly-in there last week. Then when the turnout looked really good they bumped the price another dime in the middle of Saturday. Never buy fuel there. .48 cents cheaper at Calaveras from probably the same distributor.

Enough can't be said for Paul and the head maintenance guy (sorry maintenance man I am rather horrible at names) at Bald Eagle Aviation!! My wife and I flew to Columbia today and what an experience! We wanted to land on the turf runway, due to several other aircraft in the pattern we went with the flow for 17. Had lunch at Pete's Cafe, checked out old town Columbia.. Way cool! We returned to the airport to fly home. I went into Bald Eagle Aviation and talked to them about our attempt for the turf runway, they went out of their way to explain a great way avoid the bustle of the traffic and get in for a turf landing, explained the great campgrounds to us, which we had to go check out. Then we decided to depart on the turf runway and Paul was nice enough to drop what he was doing come out and get a picture of us leaving the grass and said he would send it to us!! Come on now, where else are you going to find treatment and hospitality like that? By far my favorite place and people to fly to!

Flew into Columbia for 4 days of air camping. Airport and campground are phenomenal as always! The campground is huge, with hot showers, picnic tables, and is located right next to the grass runway. Little market in town can take care of most grocery needs and Pete’s Cafe is worth visiting. The town has a lot of charm, but be prepared to walk a few miles anytime you need anything. Bald Eagle Aviation has some food items in terminal & will bring ice out to campground if you ask. Very nice! Best thing (since I live in Arizona) was showing my son the joys of landing on an actual grass runway! Priceless!

Inexpensive overnight parking ($4); walk to town (1 mile) if you can, else 24hr taxi is "49er Cab" at 209 534 8294 (flat fee $15).

Very friendly and helpful staff at Bald Eagle Aviation. They keep a good eye on the ramp. We had a great lunch at Pete's Cafe, out on the main road and a half-block to the right. Pete and his wife are Greek; their baklava is the best we've ever had.

Flew the Cardinal in for our first fly-in camp trip. Don at Bald Eagle went out of his way to help us. He even delivered ice right to our campsite! Camping in the shade of the oak trees right next to the grass runway - too cool! The recently opened Pete's Cafe absolutely blew our socks off with the most amazing food! My wife and I are now huge fans of this great weekend getaway. Gary & Linda Welch

Awesome airport with beautiful scenery. The winds were horrible the day that I went but switched to the grass crosswind runway and got on the ground safely. Very professional staff and a must see destination. Also Frosty Restaurant down the road is a great little drive-in with fun people.

For lunch, I'd recommend either El Jardin, which is out on the highway opposite the town, or the Columbia House in the town itself. Columbia House has sandwiches and salads for lunch. Waitresses dressed in period style. During the fire season, there can be a steady stream of fire bombers coming and going. They tend to land 35 and depart 17 since their base is at the approach end of 17.
